Course Description
This course is a hands-on learning experience designed to teach new woodworkers how to properly and safely use hand-held routers. From the absolute basics all the way to building your own custom woodworking projects, this course has you covered.
This course is designed and laid out with 6 chapters, 21 lessons, 14 downloadable resources, and short, simple quizzes after each chapter to lock in your learning.
The first chapter is all about the absolute basics for those that are completely new to the wood router.
You’ll learn briefly about the history of the wood router, how to identify the two main categories of routers, the main parts, and components, and how sizing works so you’ll be able to choose the best router for your needs.
Throughout chapter two you’ll learn how to identify the parts of a router bit, how to know what a good quality bit is, how to install and remove bits properly (even those that are stuck), and how to set proper bit speed with a variable speed router.
In chapter three you’ll learn how to adjust and set the depth for both a fixed base and plunge base router. You’ll also learn how to rout in the proper direction for both inside and outside edges; How to safely hold your material down using 5 different methods; How to use dust collection; How to understand proper safety methods, including using respirators, and it’s in this chapter where you’ll get hands-on, so you’ll learn how to router both the edge and surface of a project.
Chapter four is all about maintenance, where you’ll learn how to clean, sharpen, and store your router bits. In addition, you’ll learn how to clean and care for your router itself, and even how to identify when your router brushes are going bad and what it looks like to replace them.
Chapter five is really important because that’s where you’ll learn about common issues and mistakes that you may encounter as a beginner. You’ll learn how to fix and overcome those issues, including things like router burn, bit malfunctions, bit design issues, bit chatter, and how to deal with difficult grain direction which is causing poor cut quality.
Finally, in chapter six, you’ll be able to put it all together to make three of your very own projects. First, you will make two different cutting boards, one from a kit for those that don’t have a lot of tools, and one made completely from scratch for those that do. Second, you’ll make custom valet trays, which are a great way to introduce you to using templates. And lastly, you’ll make your own free-hand wooden signs or wood carvings.
